Urbanization in fast-growing economies like India often leads to spontaneous expansion of built-up areas, posing significant environmental and planning challenges. Sustainable urban growth requires timely and resource-efficient geospatial analysis of expansion patterns. This study analyses ward-level urban expansion patterns in Mumbai between 2017 and 2024 using open geospatial tools and methods It classifies newly developed urban growth into infill, edge-expansion, and outlying types, enabling planners to identify priority zones for infrastructure upgrades, densification and sprawl control, supporting more sustainable, data-driven urban development. India’s Urban Heat Inequality: Mapping the Rich–Poor Temperature Divide Delhi This project focuses on mapping and analyzing urban heat inequality in Delhi, highlighting how vulnerable communities, particularly those living in slum areas, experience higher land surface temperatures compared to more developed regions. Using GIS techniques and satellite data, the study reveals how factors like land use, population density, and urban infrastructure contribute to the uneven distribution of heat stress across the city.

Sprawl-Induced Environmental Degradation Coimbatore City, Tamil Nadu Mapping the Cost of Progress: Wetland Loss and Degraded Lands in Coimbatore- Coimbatore, known as the "Manchester of South India," is rapidly transforming into an urban and industrial powerhouse. While this development brings economic opportunities and infrastructural growth, it also exerts intense pressure on the region’s natural ecosystems, particularly wetlands and fertile lands that once formed the backbone of its environmental resilience. This theme explores the ecological cost of urbanization, focusing on the loss of wetlands and the degradation of surrounding lands as a direct consequence of unregulated expansion.

Disaster Resilience and Public Health Mapping The study covers pan-India, focusing on district-level analysis. Hazard-prone zones are identified using data from ISRO Bhuvan, NDMA, and GSI, while hospital locations and population data are overlaid to analyze healthcare density vs. population vulnerability in these regions. Specific hotspots with high population and low hospital coverage in high-risk zones are highlighted for strategic interventions. This project aligns with the hackathon’s objective of utilizing open-source geospatial tools to address real-world problems. It combines multi-hazard risk mapping with public health infrastructure analysis, contributing to disaster preparedness, healthcare equity, and resilient urban/rural planning.
